Photo 1-128, taken in July 1953, shows barchan and transverse dunes at the eastern end of the Dumont Dunes south and west of the abandoned Tonapah & Tidewater right-of-way. Photo 3-54, taken in August 1978, shows that the sand dunes have advanced nearly 3 km to the northeast and have crossed and nearly obliterated the right-of-way. These photos document a desertification rate of 120 m/yr during the 25 year period from 1953 to 1978.
